Dolan Ellis and Marshall Trimble have
been friends for a very long time, and have been doing shows together occasionally
since the late 1970s. If you've never caught their act, be sure to
do so whenever you can. They usually do at least one each year at the
Kerr Cultural Center in Scottsdale, and have recently started to take their
shows to Prescott, to the historic Palace Bar, which is now a wonderful dinner
show venue.
Like Dolan, Marshall fills a governor-appointed
position for Arizona. Marshall is Arizona's Official
State Historian. Governor Fife Symington first appointed him in
that role.
The photograph above was taken during
the Grand Opening celebration of the New Folklore Center. In addition
to being one of the stage performers at each of the shows that weekend, Marshall
presented a "Ribbons of Time" ceremony on the deck at the beginning of each
show. As always, his presentation was both very informative and very
funny.
It's hard to find a Western humorist
who can beat Marshall Trimble. He is extremely quick-witted, and his
timing is impeccable. Because of his stature as State Historian and
his great abilities as a speaker, Marshall is often chosen for important
speaking engagements. In April 2005, for example, Marshall emceed the
induction ceremony for the Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame.
Marshall began as a folksinger in his
teens, but along the way he took an academic turn and now combines his love
of music with his love of history. He has a lot of fun with both, and
really makes history fun for the rest of us--including his many loyal students
at Scottsdale Community College.
Marshall's achievements and awards
are too numerous to list on these pages, but there are two that stand out. For
one, Marshall was inducted into the Arizona Veterans' Hall of Fame
in November 2004. That is perhaps Marshall's proudest honor of all. For
another, Marshall is a charter member of the Arizona Culture Keepers, and
he was largely responsible for starting that program to honor individuals
(including our own Dolan Ellis) and groups who are working diligently to
ensure Arizona's traditions and folklore are not lost in these modern times.
