AFP Guest Artists
The adorable lady in this photograph is
Marjorie Tyndall of Green Valley. Marjorie has never been a traditional
AFP guest artist, but she often plays her concertina on the deck before a
show. Dolan would also recruit Marjorie to play dinner music at the
Red Rooster Ruckus fundraisers.
At one of those Ruckuses, Marjorie got
quite a surprise when Scotty Johnson, leader of the band Native Seed, called
her up to the stage to play a song with them.
Marjorie likes to make music wherever
she goes, and she typically wears a tiny harmonica on a neckchain. Her
friend, Lucille Riley, champion on
the hammered dulcimer and autoharp, also wears a harmonica, and tells stories
of the two of them disrupting lunches with their lively folk music.
Marjorie and her husband, Bill, a retired
pilot, recently attended a concert at the Temple of Music and Art in Tucson
by the Alison Brown Quartet. Tim
Wiedenkeller, a favorite AFP artist,
opened the show and brought Scotty Johnson and Ilene Spector of Native Seed
on stage to provide harmony vocals for some numbers. During the intermission,
Marjorie had the opportunity to play the harmonica for Scotty and Ilene,
as well as the legendary Travis
Edmonson. So
she can boast that she has "played the Temple."
Marjorie's turkey basters are creating
quite a stir. She buys just the right type, decorates them, and adds
some water to make the right sounds.
